The Agri-Food Protection Bill has been approved. The measure, recently officially approved by the Italian Parliament, introduces the crime of agro-piracy and, more importantly, establishes a framework of penalties for irregularities in the sector, which will allow for greater protection and safeguarding of domestic agri-food production.

Two crimes, plus an aggravating circumstance, have been added to the Criminal Code: food fraud, which carries a prison sentence of two months to one year for anyone selling food or beverages that, to their knowledge, are not genuine or come from places other than those indicated.
The crime of selling food with false markings carries a prison sentence of three to 18 months for anyone using distinctive markings or indications to mislead the buyer regarding the quality or quantity of food. The aggravating circumstance of agro-piracy applies when the illegal activity is carried out in an organized and continuous manner, with penalties increased by up to a third.
